| Retired Army lieutenant general known for effective command of Hurricane Katrina task force ATLANTA, May 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Crawford & Company (NYSE: CRDA; CRDB) today announced that retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honore, renowned for his command of the joint task force responsible for coordinating military relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina, has been elected to the Board of Directors. Honore began his military service in 1971, when he was commissioned a second lieutenant of infantry and awarded a bachelor of science degree in vocational agriculture from Southern University and A&M College. He held a variety of command and staff positions during his 37-year military service career, including as commanding general, 2nd Infantry Division in Korea; vice director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and commander of the Standing Joint Force Headquarters for Homeland Security, part of the U.S. Northern Command. His overseas assignments included tours of duty in Korea and Germany and he served in Iraq and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. Honore was named commanding general of the First U.S. Army in 2004 and chosen to lead Joint Task Force Katrina in 2005. He drew praise from leaders for his effective direction of the military response to Hurricane Katrina. In the aftermath of that work, he received more than a dozen awards, including the NAACP Humanitarian Award, National Newspaper Publishers Association Newsmaker of the Year Award, and Gen. Omar N. Bradley Spirit of Independence Award. Honore's numerous military awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (four oak leaf clusters), the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (three oak leaf clusters), and the Army Commendation Medal (three oak leaf clusters). After his retirement from military service in 2008, Honore became a senior scientist with The Gallup Organization and a CNN contributor, focusing in both roles on the subject of disaster preparedness, response and recovery. A frequent guest lecturer and presenter to a wide variety of organizations, he is the author of Survival: How a Culture of Preparedness Can Save You and Your Family from Disasters. Honore is a native of Lakeland, La., and lives in Atlanta, Ga. In addition to his bachelor of science degree, he holds a master of arts in human resources from Troy State University and has received several honorary doctoral degrees.
